Efficiency and the Power of Habit
Much has been written on the power of habit and I do not cite this important work now, but today I'd like to highlight one aspect of the power of habit that I have not heretofore seen receiving sufficient emphasis: efficiency. Inasmuch as our good habits are completely aligned with our deeper purpose, our Why?, and they are valuable to continue forever, habit has the remarkable benefit of producing efficiency. Ralph Waldo Emerson, in this oft-quoted line for which I cannot find the citation, says: "That which we persist in doing becomes easy to do; not that the nature of the thing has changed, but that our power to do has increased." After we are certain that we should even be doing the activity in the first place, let us press on and persevere in the performance of our good habits, knowing that we will, soon or eventually, get better at performing them.
